10 Essential Tips for a Successful Newborn Photo Session
Hello and welcome! As you eagerly await the arrival of your little bundle of joy, there's one thing you won't want to miss – a heartwarming newborn photo session to cherish those precious early days forever. As a seasoned newborn photographer and a mom myself, I know just how magical these sessions can be. But, I also understand that they require some preparation to ensure everything goes smoothly. That's why I'm here to share my top 10 essential tips for a successful newborn session:
1. Time It Right: The first two to three weeks of your baby's life are pure gold for a newborn session. During this time, babies are usually sleepier and more willing to be posed, making it easier to capture those dreamy shots. So, it's ideal to schedule your session within the first 21 days if possible. That said, don’t skip a newborn session if you’re outside of that window! Your new babe may be a bit more awake as they’re older, but I adore eye contact photos of a stretching babe just as much as a curled up, sleepy babe.
2. Keep It Cozy: Newborns adore warmth and comfort, just like they were in your womb. Ensure that the shooting space is kept nice and toasty to keep your little one content throughout the session. Pro tip: dress the family in layers to stay comfortable yourself!
3. Bring a Sentimental Item: Did great-grandma knit a special blanket for baby? Do you have a baseball mit that was passed down through generations? Is there a specific prop or item that you want to have photographed with baby during multiple sessions to show their growth? Bring it along!
4. Plan for Feeding Breaks: A well-fed baby is typically a happy baby. Plan for feeding breaks, so your little one stays content and serene. A heads up: babies often experience a “cluster-feeding” phase between two to three weeks of life.
5. Dress for Simplicity: When it comes to newborn photography, less is more. Opt for simple and timeless outfits that won't distract from the main focus – your adorable baby. For the family: Soft tones, minimal patterns and soft fabrics for baby to lay against are best.
For baby: bring plenty of diapers, wipes and a favorite, well-fitting, simple onesie or outfit. It’s very likely that your photographer will have plenty of wraps or newborn outfits ready for you to use. These often photograph more timelessly than store-bought outfits.
6. Arrive with a fed family and bring desired snacks and water! These sessions are baby-led and can sometimes feel long so bring nourishment just in case.
7. Be Patient: Newborns have their schedule, and sometimes, that means they need a little extra time for cuddles, feeding and changing. So, patience is key – it will be worth it!
8. Capture Those Details: Those tiny fingers, little toes, and button nose – they grow up so fast! Make sure your photographer captures these precious details because they'll be cherished forever.
9. Include the Family: A newborn session isn't just about the baby; it's about the love and joy that your family shares. Embrace the opportunity to capture the connection. Another pro tip: arrive in separate vehicles and have your partner or a family member take older siblings out for a treat after the family portion of the session is finished, while you stay with baby and your photographer to finish baby’s solo photos.
10. Relax and Enjoy: Most importantly, relax and enjoy the experience. Newborn photography sessions are all about creating beautiful memories and celebrating this magical time in your life. So, be yourself, and let your love shine through.
As you prepare for your newborn session, remember that it's not just about getting perfect shots; it's about capturing the love, joy, and connection that your family shares. So, take a deep breath, trust your photographer, and savor each tender moment during this magical experience.
